Beginning in the late 1800s, the following myths were passed down from generation to generation. They included the following beliefs: 1-that older people were poor workers (not true),2- that older people were unhealthy,(true only for a minority) and 3-beginning in the 1960's in particular, that older people were better suited to a life of glamorous segregation and leisure,(which benefited the entrepreneurs). These myths were promoted at the expense of older people who wanted to continue contributing to society through their continued work, or who wanted to remain with their families, and at the expense ofpeople who wanted a more dignified life, with more choices as to what constituted meaning and purpose. These Toxic myths, reducing older people to stereotypes, have endured.
