Ever wonder how people communicate? Ever wonder if it is even possible? Well, the family above was visiting the night after Thanksgiving, 2023, and they look happy, don’t they? They were working on it. Communicating. They were trying. Or not trying, just being. And it all worked out. But communication like everything else in life, doesn’t just happen. It is a learned behavior. And if you are struggling with it, don’t despair, because you can learn. You just have to find somebody who is better at it than you are, and watch what they do, and practice some of their moves. There is ALWAYS room for improvement, in groups, in couples, even by yourself!! If you take the time, maybe setting 15 minutes a day aside, to quietly listen, you can learn to communicate, even with yourself, better. Don’t compare and despair, I don’t mean that. I mean hang around with people who are good at what you want to master, including communication if that is your thing, and break what these skillful people do ,into little steps. And slowly learn to do what they do, in your own way of course, and with your own unique style. Scientists have found that intelligence is only correlated with skills at the beginning; after that, intelligence can sometimes be a handicap, because it blinds people to the fact that practice is more important, knowledge of the subject matter is more important in the long run, than anything else. Intelligence can get you in the door of a skill more quickly; but after that it is long skillful focus that matters. Malcolm Gladwell talks about the 10,000 hour rule in OUTLIERS, Anders Ericsson talks about the need for ‘deliberate practice’ in PEAK. Both books are about how we teach ourselves to learn, and that is where we can gain the biggest advantage. So communication anybody? Practice it!!. Find an inspiring vision, a person, an idea or some sort of focus point that can lead the way for you, and practice!!
